Maple Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher may not be about to pull the trigger on a trade, but the Toronto Sun reports he's having discussions with other teams.
Fletcher returned from the NHL's general managers meeting in Chicago yesterday and had "talked preliminarily with a few teams."
The paper suggests the Leafs could make a move in the coming weeks.
"At some stage we'll seriously consider trading a defenseman for a forward," Fletcher told the Sun. "But it's going to have to be for somebody who really, really appeals to us."
The Leafs have a surplus of defenseman, with two or three sitting out each game. Ian White, who has yet to play in a game this season, is among those on the trading block.
"I don't blame [White] for being frustrated," Fletcher. "He played 81 games for us last year. But I'm sure he'll get his chance."
It's also been widely reported that the Leafs are entertaining the thought of trading Matt Stajan, Alexei Ponikarovsky and Carlo Colaiacovo. www.thefourthperiod.com/news/tor081027.html

Fletcher on Bill Watters show yesterday:
Fletcher: "We know a lot of teams out there are a little shy on defence. We have 9 quality NHL defenceman. Eventually the phones will begin to ring and we're looking for a quality NHL forward."

I guess that means if a trade goes down Fletcher can say we have 2 top 6 forwards?? 3 would be nice lol.
IMO
all those guys are expendible IMO. I wouldn't move Stajan unless we get a decent value for him, I think he still had more to prove.
Carlo, i like the guy a lot but I will take what we can get for him if he's not going to be playing regularly.

He quit Temp. Its not over yet and he may return if its local. Toronto being the closest team to his home town and Buffalo next.

It was reported that he retired due to personal reasons. I live in St Catharines which is where he played his junior and rumour around town is he got himself into drugs.

From his home town. I dont know him personally but the rink talk is he is taking time off due to burn out and he is skating already.

I would be willing to trade white for rights to him. It's a gamble, but could pay off very well. You clear up the log-jam a little but don't lose a big asset.
Toronto has a much better chance in my opinion of woo-ing him to play than Columbus just based on proximity to his home town. He's a dynamite power-forward too, something we are desperately lacking.
