I think a good move for Toronto would be to do a sign and trade with Sundin. Both teams that I think Sundin will goto (Montreal/Rangers) would need to free up cap space to get him. So sign Sundin, then trade him to a team and get some players back (a good forward would be nice!). I'm sure Sundin would be down for something like this... depending on how much he likes Fletcher I guess Any thoughts?

Very much like a NBA deal! I havent thought of that. Interesting, Im sure that would work for NYR. I think the NHL general managers havent swung there thinking in that direction yet. They seem to prefer to trade a asset to a team for a lesser salary then sign the free agent. If they can get there heads around the idea it would make it interesting.
As for Toronto I dont think Toronto would want one of NY's old salary dumps. In order for your idea to work it would have to be a large contract and Toronto is headed in a different direction. Cliff wants youth, picks and blue chip prospects.
Now if a team wanted to unload a large salary dump and included a high pick or blue chip prospect in a package now your idea may work. We need Alec to toss this idea to Cliff and see what he says.

On further review of this idea I dont see the point. Why would the NYR ( or whover ) not just sign Sundin on there own and deal a old expensive salary ( with a pick or prospect if need be ) without the sign and trade concept. I'd have to see the reason why the NBA does it and if it has any benifit in the NHL. Anybody know?

Not to beat a dead horse but it has come to my attention that the NHL may have a rule in place that blocks a team that signs a free agent from trading that player for a period of time. Maybe someone can comment on that .

I don't see why it would be different for a free agent, as it happens all the time where a play gets (re)signed and then traded.
As for another team just signing him, well this is where obviously Sundin would have to be on board with the idea.
Now even if a team wants to give us salary dump, as long as he is good and the trade includes some sort of prospect or picks, then the Leafs would win for the short-term and long-term. This could be accomplished on its own, or with a package including White/Colaiacovo...

would tampa trade Stamkos? highly unlikely I don't know. Looking at it that's what we think but at some point it would have to be LeCavalier OR Stamkos.
