Larry T of MSLE commenting on the idea of Steve Yzerman as possible GM candidate: www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080925.wsptleafs2509/BNStory/Sports/columnistsI, for one, have no problem with MLSE considering a former elite player and current international ambassador to hockey as a possible GM for the team. I actually don't think it's the correct move to eliminate possibilities immediately. ie. putting your eggs in one basket., especially Steve Yzerman, who has been touted to get the GM position for team Canada in 2010. Ken Holland himself describes stevie Y to be the "ideal candidate to be the executive director of the 2010 Canadian Olympic hockey team". www.sportsnet.ca/thewire/hockey/2008/09/17/steve_yzerman_touted/Now, with everything the leafs have gone through, and the new direction the management is heading, shouldn't Stevie Y be absolutely considered for the GM position? The leafs aren't putting themselves over team Canada, are they? Millard hinted today on hockeycentral at noon that it may be a bad move to solely consider burke for GM, now that hes having his own troubles in duckland? Your thoughts?

I'm not a big fan of Burke at all anymore. I'd rather try the tandem of Joe Nieuwendyk and Stevie Y as our GMs in similar circumstance to Les Jackson and Brett Hull.

I've never really been a big fan of Burke, but he seems to fit the Leaf mold of giving away players for little to no return.

Stevie Y was on hockeycentral today, chatting with kypreos and millard. Didn't mention any teams, but he did say that at this moment, he is with the wings and likes it. He sounded like he wanted to move on to a GM or Assistant GM position type soon.
Also sounds like hes going to be GM of team canada.
I personally think steve yzerman fits the mold for toronto as a team on the rise.

I honestly would be a little bit concerned about the notion of a rookie GM, even one with as much hockey experience, respect, and knowledge as Stevie Y.
I suppose I wouldn't be completely opposed to the idea if they managed to get a very smart and experienced hockey guy to be the president, ala Bob Nicholson.

yeah, that would be ideal, I think. But, maybe the leafs org has a different idea, Im sure they do with nieuwendyk sitting infront of a desk.

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times.
President: Bob Nicholson GM: Dave Taylor or man of Nicholson's choosing Head Coach: Craig Hartsburg
It's already too late to get Hartsburg, how much further will the Leafs go?

I personally would have no problem with Stevie Y as GM. In fact, I think it would be a good move. Just because he doesn't have any GM experience, does not put him in the same catagory as JFJ. Yzerman has been surrounded by the very best in the business for years. As well as branching out and being the head guy of the World Championships. Unfortunately, the Leafs brass just seem to want to put all people into the same catagory when speaking of experience versus inexperience. I don't think they get it at all.
