I was just trying to think of the worst trades the leafs have made and then went on to search the net... its funny what could have been.. ill list a few which I personally think was the worst of the trades from 1996.
1996:
To Islanders: Kenny Jonsson, Darby Hendrickson, Sean Haggerty and a 1st round pick in 1997 (Roberto Luongo).
To Toronto: Wendel Clark, Matthieu Schneider and D.J. Smith
1998
To Rangers: Matthieu Schneider
To Toronto: Alexander Karpovstev and 4th round pick in 1999 (Mirko Murovic)
1999:
Toronto traded Jason Smith to Edmonton for Oiler's 4th round pick in 1999 (Jonathan Zion) and a 2nd round pick in 2000 (Kris Vernarsky).
Toronto traded Fredrik Modin to Tampa Bay for Cory Cross and a 7th round pick in 2001.
2001
Los Angeles traded Aki Berg to Toronto for Adam Mair and Leafs' 2nd round pick in 2001. (turned out to be Mike Cammalleri)
2003:
San Jose traded Owen Nolan to Toronto for Alyn McCauley, Brad Boyes, and a 1st round pick in 2003
Chicago traded Phil Housley to Toronto for a 4th round pick in 2003 or a 9th round pick in 2003 or 4th round pick in 2004.
2004
Rangers trade Brian Leetch to Toronto for Maxim Kondratiev, Jarkko Immonen, a 1st round pick in 2004 and a 2nd round pick in 2005 (Michael Sauer).
2005
To Boston Bruins : Tuukka Rask
To Toronto Maple Leafs : Andrew Raycroft
To Toronto Maple Leafs: Vesa Toskala and Mark Bell
To San Jose Sharks : 13th overall pick in 2007 (traded to St. Louis for 1st round pick in 2007, Logan Couture) the 44th overall pick in 2007 (traded to St. Louis) and the 4th round pick in 2009
Traded picks away for old geezers.. we gave a 1st and 2nd round pick for Brian Leetch... lost loungo, logan couture, brad boyes, Mike Cammalleri, tuukka rask.
If you look at the Nolan trade, we lost Boyes, we also lost that 1st round pick. www.hockeynut.com/0304/round1.html
Boston traded their 16th pick to San Jose for their 21st pick which they got from Toronto. If you look at what the leafs could of picked up at that draft if they didnt trade that pick: Ryan Getzlaf, Ryan Kesler, Mike Richards, and Corey Perry.
Its sad to see how our Gm's made these trades without thinking about the future.
